A whisper of the past. That’s what Kabutozuka Kofun feels like. Standing before this ancient burial mound I invite you to journey back in time.

Kabutozuka Kofun is a significant historical site in Tokyo. It’s one of the largest kofun in the city. Kofun are ancient burial mounds built during the Kofun period. This particular mound is located in the southern part of Tokyo. It’s near JR Shinagawa Station. It’s on the grounds of the Shinagawa South Senior High School.

Imagine the scale of this structure. Its height is estimated at 17 to 18 meters. Its main axis measures approximately 75 meters. The rear circular portion has a diameter of 62.4 meters. Its height is 6.8 meters. The total area is roughly 10000 square meters.

Surveys conducted in 1977 and 1984 by the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education revealed much. The original shape of Kabutozuka Kofun is still partially visible. Two surveys confirmed the existence of the mound’s edges and surrounding ditches. The outer edge of the ditch is apparently horseshoe shaped. This suggests a pre-frontal post-circular kofun design. Fragments of clay figurines and roof tiles have been unearthed. These unique features suggest the mound dates to the latter half of the Kofun period. This puts it around the 5th century. The similarities in the excavated pottery to pottery from other sites imply the possibility that the same group of artisans constructed it. River stones were used to create distinctive stone arrangements on the mound’s slopes. The interior structure remains unexplored. However Kabutozuka Kofun is the largest kofun in Tokyo. This is due to its remarkable preserved edges and the unique stone arrangements.

Picture the skilled artisans who meticulously crafted this ancient structure. They used the natural landscape to build a monumental tribute. They carefully planned the placement of each piece of stone. It is a testament to the artistry of its time.

Kabutozuka Kofun stands as a powerful reminder of Tokyo’s rich past. This impressive kofun provides invaluable insights into the burial practices of the Kofun period. The mound continues to fascinate researchers and visitors alike. It silently shares stories of the past. Let its grandeur inspire awe and wonder. It is a truly remarkable site to behold.
