Gazing upon Koryu-ji Temple, one can almost feel the weight of centuries. This ancient temple, nestled in Kyoto, whispers tales of time. Koryu-ji Temple is not just Kyoto’s oldest temple. It’s a living testament to history, art, and spiritual devotion. Founded in the early 7th century, it cradles some of Japan’s most significant cultural treasures, spanning from the Asuka to the Kamakura periods.

Koryu-ji Temple holds a unique distinction. Legend says Hata no Kawakatsu, founder of Japanese kagura dance, established the temple. He received a statue of Miroku-Bosatsu from Prince Shotoku. This statue, the Miroku-Bosatsu, became Japan’s first designated National Treasure in 1951. Housed in the Reihoden, alongside other ancient Buddhist images, paintings, and historical documents, it radiates an aura of timeless beauty. Imagine Kawakatsu, moved by the statue’s serene presence, dedicating this temple to its preservation.

Within the temple grounds, the Kodo hall stands as a testament to resilience. Originally built in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 17th, it has witnessed centuries of devotion. The hall, designated as an Important Cultural Property, enshrines a seated figure of Amida-Nyorai Buddha, the Buddha of Buddhist paradise, also a National Treasure. Surrounding it are other statues, each a designated Important Cultural Property, adding to the hall’s spiritual richness.

Koryu-ji Temple is more than just a repository of ancient artifacts. It’s a place of living worship. Visitors can witness the beauty of the wooden structures, the imposing gate, and even a small fountain adorned with a dragon and a large bell. The main hall houses a wooden image of Bodhisattva, the Miroku-Bosatsu-Hanka-Shii-zo, believed to have been a gift to Prince Shotoku from the Korean court. This statue, depicting the Buddha of the Future in half-lotus, pondering humanity’s future, was likely once gilded, adding to its mystique. Koryu-ji Temple is a journey through time. A visit in August offers the added beauty of lotus flowers in full bloom in the temple pond. And although held less frequently now, the traditional bull festival, once a vibrant prayer for good harvest and protection from disturbances, echoes the temple’s rich history. Koryu-ji Temple offers a glimpse into Japan’s spiritual and artistic heritage, a place where the whispers of the past resonate with the present.
