Established in an unknown year Koutoku-ji Temple stands before you. This temple of the Shinbutsu-shūgō sect has a rich though partially undocumented history. Originally located in Nakano its story unfolds across several moves. First it resided in a district called Fuchū. Then in 1106 it moved to what is now the city’s Chōfu district. Later still around 1218 it shifted again this time to the present-day site. The temple’s final relocation took place in 1910 during the Meiji era. This move solidified its presence. It became a permanent fixture in the Nakano ward of Tokyo.

Koutoku-ji’s founder remains a mystery lost to time. However we know that the temple was established by the esteemed priest Akihito. He dedicated his life to Buddhist practice. The temple grounds house a significant five-story pagoda constructed in 1995. The pagoda is made of wood. It features intricate carvings a testament to the craftsmanship. This was a community effort involving contributions from across Japan.
