Nestled in the heart of Tokyo’s Nakano ward, we find the serene Senzo-in Temple, also known as Senzouin. Senzouin is a Buddhist temple with a rich, albeit somewhat mysterious, history. Its exact founding date remains unknown. Temple records suggest it was established during the Edo period, possibly as a branch of the Chuo Senzoji Temple. However, the current Senzouin has no formal connection to Senzoji. Over time, Senzouin served as both a temple and a nunnery. It went through several name changes, including Jogyoan and Shimo-no-miya. Locals often referred to it as Shimo-no-miya no Nunnery. In 1958, Senzouin declared its independence, becoming a standalone temple within the Shinshu Otani-ha branch of True Pure Land Buddhism. Senzouin holds various annual events. These include a memorial service in January, a Setsubun bean-throwing ceremony in February, and the Higan-e equinox services in spring and autumn. April celebrates Buddha’s birthday. June hosts the Daisetsu-e, a large-scale memorial service. July features the Urabon-e, a traditional Buddhist ceremony for the deceased. December concludes the year with the Jodo-e, celebrating the enlightenment of the Buddha. Senzouin stands quietly amidst the bustling city. It offers a tranquil escape for those seeking respite and reflection.
