Zhuhai Stadium quickly became a cornerstone of Zhuhai’s sporting scene, hosting thrilling football matches and athletic events. Its 35,000-seat capacity made it the largest stadium in Zhuhai and one of the largest in Guangdong province. Beyond local games, Zhuhai Stadium has also welcomed international competitions. In 2019, the stadium stepped onto the world stage when it hosted a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification match. This was a momentous occasion, as the match was relocated from Macau due to ongoing renovations at their stadium. Zhuhai Stadium provided a worthy alternative, showcasing its capabilities to a global audience. Interestingly, the stadium has also graced the silver screen. It was featured in the popular sports comedy film “Shaolin Soccer.” The movie, directed by and starring Stephen Chow, depicts a former Shaolin monk using martial arts to play football. Picture the scene: the Zhuhai Stadium transformed into a battleground of gravity-defying kicks and superhuman saves. But Zhuhai Stadium’s story also holds a darker chapter. In 2024, a tragic vehicle ramming attack outside the stadium claimed the lives of 35 people and injured many more. This event cast a somber shadow over the stadium’s vibrant history. Today, Zhuhai Stadium continues to serve as a hub for sporting events and a reminder of both triumph and tragedy. It stands as a testament to the resilience of the community and the enduring power of sport.
