Whispers of history linger along the old Kosugi Highway, where the stone memorial of the Second Shogun Hidetada’s Kosugi Inn Ruins stands. Here, at the crossroads of past and present, we find echoes of a bustling Edo-era village. The Nidaime Shogun Hidetada’s Kosugi Inn Ruins memorial marks a pivotal point in Kosugi’s transformation. This place, once a quiet farming community, became a vital stop on the road to Edo. The Kosugi Inn, originally built around 1608 by the shogun Hidetada, served as a lodging for the Tokugawa clan and visiting dignitaries. In 1640, it underwent significant expansion, encompassing nearly four hectares. The inn became a hub of activity, hosting travelers, townspeople, and even the shogun himself during his inspection tours.

The layout of the Kosugi Inn was strategic. Its main gate faced the bustling Kosugi Highway. Inside, various buildings housed the shogun, his retinue, and staff. The inn’s location at a sharp bend in the Kosugi Highway wasn’t accidental. The curve, much like a fortified gate, enhanced the inn’s security. Nearby temples, like Saimyo-ji and Senkawa-ji, also served as defensive points, further protecting the inn and its distinguished guests. Tokugawa Ieyasu, Hidetada’s father and the first shogun, prioritized the development of the Kanto region. He recognized the importance of infrastructure and tasked Kosugi Sukezaemon with overseeing the construction of the Nidaime Shogun Hidetada’s Kosugi Inn, as well as crucial irrigation projects. These projects, completed in 1611, greatly benefited the region, contributing to Kosugi’s growth and prosperity.

Over time, as the Tokugawa shogunate strengthened its grip on power, the Kosugi Inn played host to many significant figures. The shogun, along with his successors Iemitsu and Ietsuna, frequently used the inn as a resting point during their travels. The inn also served as a venue for important discussions. It witnessed debates about governance, and, according to some accounts, even played a role in political intrigues, like the Tadachika Incident, where a key advisor to Ieyasu, Honda Tadachika, was implicated in a plot.

But with progress came change. The Tokaido Road, a more coastal route, became the main artery to Edo. Traffic along the inland Kosugi Highway dwindled. The Kosugi Inn lost its prominence. By 1672, parts of the inn were relocated to various temples, ultimately leading to its demise. Though the physical inn has vanished, the Second Shogun Hidetada’s Kosugi Inn Ruins stands as a testament to its vibrant past. It reminds us of a time when this place echoed with the footsteps of shoguns and the murmurs of political maneuvering. The spirit of the Kosugi Inn lives on. It continues to whisper stories of a bygone era, a time when a simple inn stood at the heart of a nation’s transformation.
