“Have you ever seen anime characters guarding a Buddhist temple?” Ryōhō-ji temple in Hachioji Tokyo isn’t your typical place of worship. Established in 1489 by Keiun Nicchō for his retirement Ryōhō-ji initially followed the Nichiren-shū branch of Buddhism. It’s nestled in the city’s western reaches its mountain name is Shōei-zan.

The temple is part of the Hachiōji Shichifukujin Pilgrimage. It enshrines the goddess Benzaiten. It’s also known as Moe-ji. This is because of its unique anime-themed signboard. The signboard features Buddhist and Shinto deities as anime characters. This was installed in 2009.

The temple’s main hall is surrounded by other structures. There is a cemetery an Inari Hall an Ema shelf and a picture guide. The picture guide is known as Moe-kaban. Ryōhō-ji’s embrace of popular culture is fascinating. Shinto kami are enshrined alongside Buddhist deities. This follows the Shinbutsu-shūgō tradition. Inari kami and Ukanomitama are in the Inari Hall. Daikokuten and Ryūjin are also enshrined. This was done to increase the temple’s popularity.

A key figure in Ryōhō-ji’s anime transformation is voice actress and illustrator Toromi. She plays Benzaiten in cosplay as Toro Benten. Ryōhō-ji even released a theme song in 2010. The song is titled Tera zukkyun! Ai no Ryōhō-ji! It was released under the Ryōhō-ji Records label by the music ensemble IOSYS. The temple’s blend of tradition and modern anime aesthetics creates a truly unique experience. It’s a testament to the temple’s innovative approach to attracting visitors and sharing its rich history. The vibrant colors and playful imagery add a layer of charm to the serene atmosphere of this historical site.

Ryōhō-ji is more than just a place of worship. It’s a cultural landmark. It bridges the gap between ancient tradition and modern pop culture. It showcases the adaptability and evolving nature of Japanese religious practices. It certainly leaves a lasting impression on visitors.
