Let’s delve into the history of Josenji Hachioji Betsuin. Its founding date is unknown. However, clues suggest it was built during the Later Hojo clan’s rule. One clue is the death of the temple’s founder. The founder, Kyuan Uikoze, died in 1587. Another clue is the founder, Kondo Sukesane. He was a vassal of the Later Hojo clan.

Josenji Hachioji Betsuin has links to a nearby shrine. It used to be a Betsuin of the Mitake Shrine. Sukesane’s death date coincides with a significant event. Hachioji Castle fell on that very day. It’s thought his associates built Josenji Hachioji Betsuin. They wanted to pray for Sukesane’s soul.

The temple grounds hold a gravestone. It is inscribed with “Founder of this Temple.” The death date is also inscribed. It reads “June 23rd, Tensho 18. That is July 24th, 1590.

To visit Josenji Hachioji Betsuin take a bus. From Hachioji Station North Exit take bus numbers 10 or 11. Alight at Yozawa-shiroato bus stop. Alternatively, take the Keio Hachioji Station bus number 4. Alight at Yozawa-shiroato bus stop as well. If you prefer a car, take the Hachioji IC second exit.
