Could a modest family gathering blossom into a vibrant church? Here at 久遠キリスト教会 (Kuon Kirisuto Kyokai), that’s exactly what happened. This Protestant church, nestled in the heart of Tokyo’s Suganami ward, has a story as unique as its name, which means “eternity.”

久遠キリスト教会 began not with grand pronouncements, but with quiet gatherings in 1940. A small group, led by Mr. Taniguchi, a layman unconnected to any established church, began meeting to study the Bible. This simple act of faith, a flickering candle in a world consumed by war, marked the church’s humble beginning.

The church’s story took a dramatic turn in 1951. Mr. Taniguchi experienced a profound spiritual awakening, a concrete encounter with the grace of Christ. This transformative event shifted the focus from Bible study to a passionate pursuit of spreading the Christian faith. The core message became “Recognize your sin and believe.”

A decade of uncertainty followed Mr. Taniguchi’s passing. Then, in 1988, Reverend Mitsuaki Mimura took the helm, breathing new life into 久遠キリスト教会. He envisioned a “church clothed in love” and initiated outreach programs, including interactions with the Seoul Shinil Church in South Korea. Tragically, Reverend Mimura passed away in 2000, but his legacy of love and service continued.

In 2001, Masanobu Mimura, Reverend Mimura’s son, became the third pastor of 久遠キリスト教会. He carries on his father’s mission with three guiding principles: preach the cross of Christ alone, live the Gospel and share it with others, and love and serve one another. Today, 久遠キリスト教会 is more than just a place of worship. It is a testament to the power of faith, a vibrant community built on the foundation of love, and a beacon of hope in the bustling city of Tokyo.
