In 1877, a cholera outbreak swept through Japan. It hit Tokyo particularly hard, claiming over 5000 lives. This tragedy spurred the Meiji government to action. They realized the urgent need for improved sanitation. In 1883, the government issued an order to improve the water supply and sewage systems. The Shimbashi Embankment, part of a broader initiative to modernize Tokyo’s infrastructure, became a key component of this plan. The government hired Dutch engineer Johannes de Rijke to lead the project. Under his guidance, the first modern sewer system in Tokyo, the \u4e0b\u6c34\u907a\u8de1, was constructed in 1884. The \u4e0b\u6c34\u907a\u8de1 was a remarkable feat of engineering for its time. It spanned 614 meters. It was constructed in two phases between 1884 and 1885. Although a third phase was planned, it was unfortunately halted due to financial difficulties. This initial system played a vital role in improving public health and preventing future outbreaks. Today, a portion of the \u4e0b\u6c34\u907a\u8de1 still functions near Shimbashi Station. While it’s not generally open to the public, its presence serves as a reminder of Tokyo’s commitment to progress. The \u4e0b\u6c34\u907a\u8de1 stands as a testament to how a devastating crisis can lead to remarkable advancements.
