Amidst the bustling energy of Kawasaki City lies 上麻生三丁目. 上麻生三丁目 is a neighborhood steeped in history. It’s a part of the larger Asao Ward, which has a fascinating story to tell. The name “Asao” itself dates back to the 8th century. Back then, this area provided hemp, a key material for textiles, to the Imperial Court. 上麻生三丁目, as part of Asao, shares this rich heritage. During the Edo period, another industry flourished here: the production of “black river charcoal.” This charcoal, known as “Kurokawa-zumi,” fueled the growing city of Edo, present-day Tokyo. The northern part of Asao, where 上麻生三丁目 is located, still retains some of its ancient ridgeline scenery. Over time, Asao, and therefore 上麻生三丁目, became increasingly connected to Tokyo. The arrival of the Odakyu Odawara Line in 1974 spurred residential development. Later, the Shin-Yurigaoka area transformed into a sub-center for Kawasaki City. This brought more public facilities and businesses. It also contributed to Asao becoming the fastest-growing ward in Kawasaki in terms of population. Interestingly, the name “Asao” almost wasn’t. When the ward was established, several names were proposed. These included “Hyakugo,” “Yamade,” and “Sassei.” “Sassei” even received the most votes in a public poll. However, officials prioritized a name rooted in the area’s history. This led to the selection of “Asao.” While much of Asao is a commercial area, 上麻生三丁目, like other parts of the ward, retains some rural character. This is particularly true in designated agricultural promotion areas like Kurokawa, Murakami, and Hayano. Kawasaki City also boasts a microcomputer city in the Naruki and Kurokawa districts. This attracts numerous computer software companies and their research facilities. So, as you wander through 上麻生三丁目, remember its layered history. From hemp production for the Imperial Court to charcoal for Edo, and from rural landscapes to modern developments. This small part of Kawasaki offers a glimpse into the enduring spirit of Japan.
