Mystery shrouds the Misaki Bridge. It stands as the first bridge over the Nihonbashi River. It connects Iidabashi 3-chome and Misaki-cho 3-chome in Chiyoda-ku. The Misaki Bridge we see today was rebuilt on March 3, 1954. The original Misaki Bridge was constructed much earlier during the Meiji era (1868-1912) as part of the Nihonbashi River’s re-excavation. The name “Misaki” itself refers to the cape-like shape of the land that jutted into the former Hibiya Inlet. This area has a fascinating history of being repeatedly excavated and buried. Initially dug in the early Edo period for the Kanda River’s construction, it was later filled in to make way for samurai residences. This cycle continued, with the river being re-excavated in 1903 as part of a city revision project. It remains open to this day. Interestingly, while much of Tokyo’s canals were reclaimed after the Meiji era, the section from the Misaki Bridge to the Horidome Bridge was dug in the opposite direction. The Misaki Bridge marks the starting point of the Nihonbashi River, splitting off from the Kanda River. This spot offers a unique perspective on Tokyo’s intricate waterway system.
