Beyond the shores of Shibaura Pier, a story unfolds. It involves steel, light, and a dash of public opinion. This is the story of the Rainbow Bridge.

Officially named Tōkyō Kō Renrakukyō, its popular name won the hearts of Tokyo residents. The Rainbow Bridge spans Tokyo Bay. It links Shibaura Pier and Odaiba. Construction began in 1987. It finished in 1993. Kawasaki Heavy Industries built this iconic structure.

The Rainbow Bridge measures 798 meters in length. Its main span stretches 580 meters. It is officially called the Shuto Expressway No. 11 Daiba Route – Port of Tokyo Connector Bridge. The public chose the name “Rainbow Bridge”.

Notice the towers supporting the bridge. They are white. This design choice ensures they complement Tokyo’s skyline from Odaiba. Lamps illuminate the supporting wires. Red, white, and green lights shine every night. Solar energy powers these lights.

The Rainbow Bridge facilitates travel. It has two decks for transportation. The upper deck carries the Shuto Expressway’s Daiba Route. The lower deck houses the Yurikamome rapid transit system. Walkways line the outer sides of this deck. Tokyo Prefectural Route 482 runs in-between.

However, some restrictions exist. Light motorcycles are not permitted on the bridge. Motorcycle pillion passengers are also banned.

Consider a stroll on the walkways. They offer different views. The north side reveals the inner Tokyo harbor and Tokyo Tower. The south side showcases Tokyo Bay. You might even see Mount Fuji. Walkway access varies by season. In summer, it is open from 9 am to 9 pm. In winter, hours are 10 am to 6 pm. Access closes 30 minutes before closing time. Bicycles are allowed if pushed.

The Rainbow Bridge connects more than locations. It links engineering, design, and public sentiment. It offers passage and views. It captures the essence of Tokyo. It stands as a symbol of progress and beauty. One hijacker once wanted to fly a plane under it. The Rainbow Bridge remains an iconic landmark.
