Hear the faint echoes of Edo period life. The story of Nihonbashi Bridge begins long ago. Nihonbashi, literally Japan Bridge, spans the Nihonbashi River in Chuo. It marks the origin for Japan’s modern road system. Imagine travelers setting off on journeys across the country.

In the Edo period, Nihonbashi was the starting point for five major highways. These connected Edo, modern Tokyo, to the rest of Japan. The Tokaido and Nakasendo roads both started here. They are now National Routes 1 and 17.

This humble bridge played a crucial role in shaping Japan’s identity. The celebrated Nihonbashi was the zero-point of Japan’s road system. First built in 1603, it was located next to the city’s fish market. It measured only about 50 meters.

The Mitsui Echigo-ya Gofukuten was established in Nihonbashi in 1673. It was a kimono dealer. This was the origin of the Mitsui Group. The history of Nihonbashi, which developed as the economic and cultural center of Japan, and the Mitsui Group stretches back over more than 300 years.

Nihonbashi was not only a transportation hub. It was also a bustling commercial center. A large fish market thrived near Nihonbashi. The northern bank of the river was home to the uogashi. It was one of the city’s most famous fish markets. It later moved to Tsukiji in 1935.

In fact, Utagawa Hiroshige captured this vibrant scene in his art. He stood on Nihonbashi facing east. He depicted the year’s first catch of bonito. The fish market bustled with activity in his art.

People believed eating the season’s first foods would prolong their life. Bonito was especially prized. It was believed to add 750 days to one’s lifespan. The craving for this fish was intense. People were willing to make sacrifices to taste it.

Today, the Shuto Expressway looms over Nihonbashi. There has been talk of moving this section underground. The Nihonbashi Revitalization Plan aims to create a new town where tradition and innovation coexist.

Nihonbashi has witnessed countless changes over the centuries. From its humble beginnings as a wooden structure to its current stone form. Nihonbashi remains a vital part of Tokyo’s landscape. As you stand here, remember its rich history. Feel the pulse of a city that bridges the past and the future.
