“A research hub built for the future.” That’s the essence of the University of Tokyo’s Transdisciplinary Sciences Building, or プロジェクト研究棟 as it’s known locally. We stand before a structure dedicated to pushing the boundaries of human knowledge. This Kashiwa Campus building, completed in 2002, represents the university’s commitment to frontier sciences. It’s the third major campus project for the University of Tokyo, following Hongo and Komaba. The プロジェクト研究棟 isn’t just another building. It’s a testament to interdisciplinary collaboration. Inside these walls, researchers from Advanced Materials Science, Advanced Energy, and Complexity Science work side-by-side. They share labs, offices, and even administrative spaces. With seven floors above ground and one below, it houses a vast 16,900 square meters of floor area. The construction is a blend of reinforced concrete (RC), steel-reinforced concrete (SRC), and steel (S) structures, reflecting a thoughtful approach to design and functionality.
