Did you know that Sunrise Inc. began as Soeisha? Imagine animators crafting worlds that would captivate audiences for decades. We are standing before a cornerstone of Japanese animation. This is Sunrise.

Sunrise’s journey started in 1972. Former members of Mushi Production sought independence. They wanted a new approach to anime production. Instead of focusing on a single creator they emphasized the role of producers.

The company was first named Sunrise Studio Ltd. It was a production site for Soeisha. Sunrise worked with Toei and Tsuburaya Productions. In October 1972 Sunrise’s first animation “Hazedon” aired.

Operations grew and in 1976 the company became Nippon Sunrise Inc. Their first original project “Super Machine Zambot 3” was broadcast in 1977. Then came “Mobile Suit Gundam” in 1979 a series that would define Sunrise.

The 1980s saw continued success. “Space Runaway Ideon” and “Fang of the Sun Dougram” became popular. “Armored Trooper Votoms” also gained a following. In June 1987 the company changed its name to Sunrise Inc.

The studio’s logo changed over time. The initial logo featured an N within a blue sun. Later designs incorporated the full name Sunrise. The current logo aims for high visibility.

Sunrise became part of the Bandai Group in 1994. This strengthened their position in the industry. They continued to produce hits such as “Mobile Fighter G Gundam” and “The Vision of Escaflowne”.

The late 1990s brought “Cowboy Bebop” a series that gained international acclaim. In 2002 Sunrise split off its music publishing division. It became Sunrise Music Inc.

The 2000s were marked by iconic shows. “Mobile Suit Gundam Seed” and “My-HiME” were released. In 2005 Sunrise joined the Bandai Namco Group. “Code Geass” premiered in 2006.

Sunrise continued to innovate in the 2010s. “Mobile Suit Gundam UC (Unicorn)” was released in 2010. They are still responsible for new animations.

Today Sunrise remains a vital force in anime. It is now a division within Bandai Namco Filmworks. From “Gundam” to “Code Geass” Sunrise has shaped animation. The studio’s legacy is secure.
