Caritas Elementary School. A place where love and learning intertwine. Imagine young voices rising in song, not in Japanese, but in French. This is one of the unique hallmarks of Caritas Elementary School. Caritas, meaning “love” in Latin, is at the heart of this Catholic institution. Established in 1963, Caritas Elementary School is part of a larger network. This includes a kindergarten, junior high, and high school, all nestled in the Nakanojima area of Kawasaki. The school’s educational philosophy emphasizes faith, critical thinking, and moral action. They aim to nurture well-rounded individuals who contribute positively to society. Caritas places a strong emphasis on experiential learning. Students engage in activities like caring for living creatures and hands-on science experiments. French language education starts early. Younger students learn through songs and simple vocabulary. Older students delve deeper, even participating in mock proficiency tests. School trips and overnight stays are also integral to the Caritas experience. Second graders spend a night and two days at the school. Third graders venture to Mount Yatsugatake for two nights and three days. Fourth and fifth graders enjoy a longer trip to Niigata for four nights and five days. Sixth graders embark on a pilgrimage-like journey to Iwakuni. This tradition was temporarily altered due to the 2011 earthquake. They now travel to Nara. Caritas Elementary School is also deeply committed to fostering musical expression. Every December, the school holds a Christmas mass. During this mass, they invite a priest and hold a special service. Fifth and sixth graders participate in a choir, performing hymns for the occasion. The school also holds auditions for limited-time theatrical performances and carol groups. These activities not only develop artistic talent but also foster teamwork and leadership skills. Tragically, in 2019, Caritas Elementary School was impacted by the Kawasaki bus stabbing incident. This event resulted in the injury of 18 children and the loss of two lives. Despite this tragedy, the school perseveres. It continues to be a beacon of education and faith in the community. The school reopened after five days, demonstrating resilience and community spirit.
