In 1992, a new landmark graced Tokyo’s skyline: the EAST21 Tower. EAST21 wasn’t just another building. It was a symbol of revitalization, built on the former site of a Kajima Construction materials center. Kajima envisioned a multi-purpose complex that would serve as a core for the Koto ward’s development. EAST21 would become a vibrant hub, fostering economic and cultural growth. This vision included a shopping mall, a hotel, and office spaces, all designed to create a “multi-focus center” for international information and communications.

EAST21 was more than just steel and concrete. It was a carefully planned ecosystem. Kajima Construction owned the land and buildings, leasing them to Kajima Tokyo Development. This ensured a cohesive management approach. Kajima Tokyo Development then subleased the spaces to various tenants, creating a dynamic mix of businesses. The hotel portion of EAST21, known as Hotel EAST21 Tokyo, became part of the prestigious Okura Hotels & Resorts group, boasting over 400 guest rooms and a variety of dining options.

The EAST21 complex also included a bustling shopping mall. Initially, it housed a branch of the UNY supermarket, later rebranded as Apita. While Apita eventually closed, it paved the way for Summit Store, offering groceries, a bakery, and a 100-yen shop. The office spaces within EAST21 Tower provided state-of-the-art facilities for businesses, while the East 21 Business Center offered flexible office solutions. The EAST21 Plaza became a popular open space, adorned with greenery and hosting various events.

The EAST21 complex faced challenges and triumphs. It weathered economic downturns and even the Great East Japan Earthquake. In response to the earthquake, Kajima Construction implemented a “Smart Energy Network,” enhancing energy efficiency and ensuring a reliable power supply. Beyond its commercial function, EAST21 also played a role in Japan’s political landscape. The Democratic Party of Japan held a convention there in 2000, and the hotel served as a venue for ballot counting during the 2007 elections. EAST21 stands as a testament to urban renewal and community building, a vibrant complex woven into the fabric of Tokyo’s eastern district.
