“Rakugo is my life” the spirit of Mr.Harukaze Totei seems to whisper. Welcome to the Hirai Enzotei. This building stands as a monument to the late master of Rakugo Harukaze Totei. The Hirai Enzotei is a facility that opened to the public in 2017.
Hirai Enzotei was once the residence of Rakugo artist, Enzotei Harukaze. Enzotei Harukaze was the eighth master of the Orange House school of Rakugo. After his passing Edogawa City purchased the home. The goal was to create a hub for Rakugo culture. This is done to honor Enzotei Harukaze’s legacy.
Enzotei Harukaze was born in Tokyo in 1936. He spent his later years in Edogawa ward. In 1952 he became an apprentice to the seventh master of the Orange House school. He took the name Kintoki. In 1965, he rose to the rank of “Shinuchi”. He then took the name, Enkin. In 1982 he became the eighth Enzotei Harukaze.
Enzotei often said, “For Rakugo artists there are only three paths. A skillful Rakugo artist. A master Rakugo artist. Or a funny Rakugo artist.” He strived to be the funny one. His performances were fast-paced. His ad-libs were witty. He was known for his service to the audience.
The Hirai Enzotei displays images and recordings of Enzotei Harukaze. It also features items related to him. Rakugo performances and lectures are held regularly. The Hirai Enzotei aims to spread Rakugo culture. It also honors Enzotei Harukaze’s memory.
Inside Hirai Enzotei, you can find a library space where images and audio of Enzotei Harukaze’s performances play. The facility also features a traditional Japanese room. It can be used for Rakugo performances. The second floor displays personal items. These items include his trademark glasses and hat.
