Picture a tranquil oasis in the heart of bustling Shinagawa. This is Shinagawa Central Park a green haven unexpectedly nestled amongst Tokyo’s urban sprawl.

The park’s origins are rooted in the former grounds of the Dai-san Hibiya Materials factory. The Shinagawa ward acquired the land for development as a public park. Construction started sometime before its opening. It officially opened on April 1 2003. However the park wasn’t fully complete until the following year. Then the water features and other amenities were finished. Shinagawa Central Park fully opened in April 2004.
Interestingly a portion of the park’s land wasn’t previously industrial. This area was part of a much earlier local park established in 1981. Shinagawa Central Park incorporated this pre-existing green space expanding on the existing infrastructure. Even today a large open field remains a popular spot for recreation. The park’s location next to the Shinagawa ward office makes it accessible to many residents.
In 2017 the park expanded again. A nearby small business center was integrated into the park’s layout. This expansion extended the park towards the Shimbashi Station area. As a result the park also gained important disaster preparedness facilities. These features include large open spaces and emergency shelters.
Beneath the surface of Shinagawa Central Park lies a hidden historical artifact. The remnants of the old Fukasawa aqueduct a structure completed in 1933 are now integrated into the park. Some sections of the aqueduct were removed during road improvements. However several sections remain preserved within the park.
