“Why is it called Akamon?” People often ask that when they first visit. Akamon refers to the red gate of Daikakuin Temple. This temple is also known as Akamon Temple. We are standing in front of a place with a rich history.
Daikakuin Temple is in Funabashi City. Specifically it is located in the town of Kaijin. The temple has been a focal point for locals. It is known as Akamon.
Founded in 1589 Daikakuin Temple has a long history. That’s right it was established during the time of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. This year marks its 430th anniversary. The main hall you see was rebuilt in 1922. It is almost 100 years old.
After the Great East Japan Earthquake people worried. They were concerned about the temple’s earthquake resistance. An assessment revealed a risk of collapse in a strong earthquake. Reinforcement was difficult. So the decision was made to rebuild.
The 33rd generation chief priest Rev. Masayuki Hori spoke about this. He noted the temple’s 430th anniversary. He also expressed hope for future development. Construction began in August 2017. The new main hall was completed in February. It is made of reinforced concrete. The hall covers about 106 square meters. The design blends cultural elements with a sense of peace.
The temple gate called Akamon was also aging. The gate was widened and rebuilt in red. In the past a bus stop was near the temple. The bus stop was named Akamon-mae. The locals affectionately call the temple Akamon.
Daikakuin Temple welcomes everyone. It does not matter what religion you are. It serves as a place for interaction and relaxation. The temple hosts Akamon Yoga and Buddhist lectures. The yoga classes started in 2013. Ms. Seiko Maehara teaches the class twice a month. Each class has more than 10 participants. The Buddhist lectures started in 2002. They are held once every other month. These lectures cover various topics. Topics range from Buddhist basics to modern funeral matters.
