Could a path to salvation be paved with twenty chapels? The 9th and 11th chapels of the pilgrimage route Loreta – Hájek whisper tales of faith and devotion. These wayside shrines, part of a grand procession from the Capuchin Loreta in Hradčany to the Franciscan monastery in Hájek, stand as testaments to a bygone era. The Loreta – Hájek pilgrimage route, established in the 17th century, offered solace and hope to those seeking divine intervention. Each chapel along the route, including the 9th and 11th we stand before, once held vibrant frescoes depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and St. Francis. Imagine the devout pilgrims, traversing this path, their prayers echoing in the air as they sought blessings at each stop.

The 9th and 11th chapels, like their counterparts, were designed in a rectangular, almost obelisk-like shape. They rise approximately eight meters high and measure four meters wide. The chapels, though weathered by time and neglect, still retain traces of their former glory. They were once adorned with stone features, such as pilasters and a three-sided top crowned with a cross. Stone bases with spheres flanked the sides. The frescoes, sadly fragmented, were divided horizontally. The upper section focused on the life of the Virgin Mary. The lower depicted scenes from the life of St. Francis. Latin inscriptions accompanied each image, guiding the pilgrims’ reflections. Above the cornice, the coats of arms of the chapel’s donors and patrons proudly proclaimed their contributions. This “coat of arms gallery” showcased the hierarchy of Bohemian society, from the Archbishop of Prague to various members of the nobility.

While the original splendor of the frescoes and the complete route may be lost to time, the 9th and 11th chapels of the Loreta – Hájek pilgrimage route remain. They offer a glimpse into the rich history of faith and devotion in this region. These simple structures, once vibrant with color and prayer, now stand as silent witnesses to the countless souls who sought solace and hope on this sacred path. Their presence reminds us of the enduring power of faith. It invites us to reflect on the stories and prayers that once filled these sacred spaces.
