“Lost, little bird?” a gentle voice chirped. A young artist, Nay Chi, looked up from her canvas, perched precariously on a small stool near the Taunggyi Cultural Museum. She squinted at the old woman, her face a roadmap of wrinkles, who offered her a betel nut. Nay Chi politely declined, her gaze returning to the vibrant scene before her: the bustling Taunggyi market, a kaleidoscope of colors and textures. Today, she was attempting to capture the spirit of Taunggyi, the “Big Mountain” city, a place that held a special place in her heart.
Taunggyi, nestled high on a mountain ridge, is more than just the capital of Shan State. It’s a melting pot of cultures, a vibrant tapestry woven from the threads of various ethnic tribes, particularly the Intha and Pa-O. Nay Chi had spent her childhood wandering these streets, mesmerized by the Pa-O women with their distinctive colorful head towels. The Sulamuni Pagoda, a gleaming white stupa modeled after the Ananda Pagoda in Bagan, watched over the city like a benevolent giant. Built in 1994 to commemorate Taunggyi’s centenary, its presence was a constant reminder of the city’s rich history.
Nay Chi’s art often reflected the unique energy of Taunggyi. She loved to depict scenes from the annual Fire Balloon Festival, a breathtaking spectacle of fireworks and elaborate hot air balloons that lit up the night sky around the full moon of Tazaungmon. The festival, a joyous celebration marking the end of the rainy season, was etched in her memory. It was a time when the city came alive, pulsing with excitement and wonder. She recalled witnessing daring competitions, where balloonists vied for altitude and design, their creations soaring high above the city.
But Taunggyi also held quieter treasures. Nay Chi remembered visiting the Shwe Phone Pwint Pagoda, perched atop a ridge east of the city. The panoramic view from the pagoda was simply breathtaking. From there, one could see the entire city spread out below and even gaze out across the plains towards Inle Lake. It was a place of serenity, a perfect spot for contemplation. The Taunggyi Cultural Museum, though small and dusty, offered glimpses into the fascinating history of the region’s diverse tribes.
Nay Chi dipped her brush into a vibrant shade of red, the same color as the towels worn by the Pa-O women. She imagined the rhythmic clang of bells from the thousands of stupas at Kakku, a Pa-O pilgrimage site a short journey south of Taunggyi. She thought of the cool, refreshing air that swept across the city, a welcome respite from the heat of the lowlands. As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows across the market, Nay Chi knew she had only just begun to capture the essence of Taunggyi. This city, with its blend of tradition and modernity, its vibrant festivals and serene landscapes, was a place that held endless inspiration.
