“What stories could this ရပ်တော်မူဘုရား Statue tell if it could speak?” I wonder.

Welcome. We are standing before a significant artistic and cultural symbol. It is the ရပ်တော်မူဘုရား Statue. The statue represents more than just art. It embodies the rich Buddhist heritage of Mandalay. Mandalay was once considered the center of the Buddhist universe in Myanmar.

King Mindon filled Mandalay with many Buddha statues. Over the years Mandalay art became established as the pure art of Myanmar. The ရပ်တော်မူဘုရား Statue reflects this artistic sophistication.

Mandalay Buddha images have many distinctive features. The ရပ်တော်မူဘုရား Statue is an example of this. These include no halo above the head. They also feature flat temples and an oval-shaped face. Human-like facial features are also a characteristic. However the ears are elongated to the shoulders.

Many Mandalay Buddha statues are adorned. These adorned images were decorated. They included a full range of ornamentation. However the crown was optional. This style cannot be found in any other school of art. Most images were lacquered. They were painted with Chad red color. Then they were gilded and decorated with inlaid glass. The borders of the face and robe were embossed. They featured inlaid glass decorations.

Crowned images in royal attire wore a conical crown. This crown is similar in shape to the Mahamuni Buddha Image crown. Most adorned images wore a crossed breast-chain. A rhombus medallion was at its center. Carvings in floral patterns were common on these medallions.

Standing Buddha statues show a specific gesture with the right hand. Many had the right hand pendant. The palm turned outwards. This is similar to the Pang Prathan Phorn gesture. It is also like the Pang Perd Lok gesture.

Mandalay art focused on realism. This is especially seen in the monk’s robes. They would be beautifully draped. The rule of Mahapurisa 32 was not a main concern. The face and feet did not necessarily follow this rule. Reclining images were portrayed as naturally as possible.

Gilt crowned images in royal attire were popular. They were decorated with red Chad and inlaid glass. Another characteristic was the clear wide striped rim of the face. Mandalay images wore a plain monk’s robe across the left shoulder. This was except for adorned images. Adorned images were dressed in a transparent robe. This robe was over an ornamented royal long-sleeved bodice.

The base of the image was low. A high throne or pedestal was placed at the back. The image would be seated on top. This symbolized the Lord Buddha as Chakravatin. He is the emperor who ruled over the universe.

Mandalay Buddha images were made from various materials. Some were cast in bronze. Others were carved from marble, jade, papier mache, or wood. Most adorned images were made from wood or bronze. Some styles used different materials in one image. The Buddha head, hands, and feet would be marble. The torso would be wood. It featured a costume painted in black lacquer. It was decorated with gilt and inlaid with colored glass. This would be adorned with separate ornamented pieces made of zinc plate.

Faces were beautified in various ways. Some were painted white. Some were gilded. Others simply showed the original material’s surface.

The Post Mandalay period saw little change in Burmese art. However some branches showed British influence. Buddhist art became less sophisticated. The colored glass inlays lacked delicacy. Post Mandalay art displays little sign of the artisan’s soul. Previous periods announced a strong faith in Buddha and Buddhism.

The ရပ်တော်မူဘုရား Statue stands as a testament to Mandalay’s devotion. It embodies artistic skill and religious dedication.

As we conclude our visit. Reflect on the craftsmanship and cultural significance. The ရပ်တော်မူဘုရား Statue symbolizes Mandalay’s rich artistic and spiritual legacy. Let its image stay with you.
