“Incredible, isn’t it?” The sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple as we stand here, at the Yankin Taung Pagoda. This hilltop, perched on the eastern edge of Mandalay, offers a view unmatched in its beauty and tranquility. Yankin Taung Pagoda, though not as ancient as some of the structures we’ve seen, holds a special charm. From here, you can see the entire city of Mandalay spread out before you, a tapestry of life and history. The pagoda itself provides a sense of peace and serenity, a welcome respite from the bustling city below. The gentle clanging of prayer bells blends with the distant sounds of life in the city, creating a unique soundscape. As you wander through the pagoda’s grounds, you might encounter a couple of domesticated stags. Legend has it that feeding them brings Buddhist merit. But the true magic of Yankin Taung reveals itself at dawn and dusk. As the sun rises or sets, it bathes the surrounding landscape in a golden glow. The rice fields shimmer like molten gold, and the Shan foothills in the distance stand out in stark relief. It’s a sight that captures the heart and soul of Mandalay, a city steeped in history and spirituality.
