“Cast in Inwa,” the inscription reads. Now, what could this refer to? It is the Setkyathiha Pagoda that holds a remarkable story within its walls. I am thrilled to share its history with you.

The Setkyathiha Pagoda is a notable landmark in Mandalay. Its fame rests on a large bronze Buddha image. King Bagyidaw commissioned this image. It was cast in Inwa. This happened just before the First Anglo-Burmese War in 1824.

Political events shaped the journey of this Buddha image. In 1852, the Second Anglo-Burmese War erupted. As a result, they moved the image to Amarapura. Then, in 1885, the Third Anglo-Burmese War broke out. Consequently, the image found its final home in Mandalay.

The Setkyathiha Pagoda itself was built in 1884. It stands south of Zegyo Market. The pagoda is on the eastern bank of the Shwetachaung Canal.

Imagine the journey this statue has been on. This bronze Buddha has witnessed war. It has been moved from place to place seeking safety. Finally, it has arrived here at the Setkyathiha Pagoda. It stands as a symbol of resilience. It stands as a beacon of faith amidst conflict. Take a moment to appreciate the artistry. Think about the history. Consider the journey. The Setkyathiha Pagoda is more than just a religious site. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Burmese people. It is a reminder of the power of faith to overcome adversity.
