Was it the guilt that haunted him? Here at the Shwenandaw Kyaung, also known as the Golden Palace Monastery, the weight of history hangs heavy. This remarkable wooden structure, intricately carved and once adorned entirely in gold, holds within its walls a story of regicide, remorse, and remarkable luck. It was once the private living quarters of King Mindon, who ruled Burma in the mid-1800s. He spent his final days in this very building, a fact that would later weigh heavily on his son, King Thibaw. Thibaw’s path to the throne was paved with bloodshed, orchestrated by his supporters who eliminated his rivals. Overwhelmed by suspicion and perhaps a guilty conscience, Thibaw believed his father’s ghost haunted the Shwenandaw Kyaung. He decided to move the entire structure from its original location within the Mandalay Palace complex to its present site in 1880, transforming it into a monastery. This act of superstition proved to be a stroke of serendipity. During World War II, the Mandalay Palace was bombed, leaving little but ruins. The Shwenandaw Kyaung, however, stood safe and sound, a testament to Thibaw’s fear and a precious survivor of a bygone era. Today, we can wander through its hallowed halls, marvel at the intricate wooden carvings depicting Buddhist scenes and mythical creatures. Although the exterior gold has faded under the relentless tropical sun, the interior still glimmers with its original gilded splendor. As you stand here, imagine the hushed whispers of monks, the scent of sandalwood incense, and the weight of history seeping from the very walls. The Shwenandaw Kyaung stands as a poignant reminder of Mandalay’s royal past, a sanctuary of serenity, and a testament to the enduring power of belief.
