Have you ever heard of the world’s largest book? Well, it’s right here, in Mandalay. This magnificent work isn’t bound in leather or paper, but in 729 white marble slabs, each one a page. This is Kuthodaw Pagoda, and it’s a must-see for your trip to Mandalay!

Kuthodaw Pagoda was built in 1857 by King Mindon during a time of political instability in Myanmar. Mindon was a devoted Buddhist, and during his reign, he wanted to ensure that the teachings of the Buddhist scriptures would be preserved for the future. He decided to commission the creation of the biggest book ever, carved in stone.

So, the King ordered the construction of 729 stupas, each one a small, dome-shaped structure, and each containing a marble slab. Each slab was hand-carved with chapters of the Tipitaka, the Buddhist canon, in the Pali language. These tablets are arranged in rows around the main central pagoda, a mesmerizing labyrinth of religious knowledge.

The inscriptions were completed in 1868. This was a huge feat, and the King himself was involved in the project, closely overseeing every detail. It’s known as “The World’s Largest Book” for a reason! What’s remarkable about it is its sheer dedication to a singular purpose – to preserve the wisdom of Buddhism for millennia to come.

To further enhance the beauty of the marble slabs, and perhaps to make the content easier to read, the lettering was initially done in gold ink. If you look closely at the slabs, you’ll see that the lettering has faded over time, but the dedication of the artisans and the King is truly inspiring, even during the 21st century.

So, don’t miss the opportunity to gaze upon this colossal collection of Buddhist wisdom. Walk down the shady corridors carved by the rows of stupas, take in the quiet ambience, and explore this unique and powerful monument. You’ll be in awe of how such a vast work was created for the ages and how it still stands today, reminding us of the enduring power of knowledge.
