Have you ever felt the weight of history beneath your feet? Here at Wat Chom Chuen you can. This small 14th-century temple whispers tales of ancient Laos. It sits quietly on the Yom River’s banks a short distance from Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat Chaliang.

Wat Chom Chuen is more than just a pretty face. It’s a place of profound cultural importance. Its laterite structures are enclosed by a wall. A chedi a mondop and a viharn are aligned along an East-West axis. The remnants of a smaller chedi and a building possibly an ubosot lie to the north.

But the story of Wat Chom Chuen goes back much further than the 14th century. Archaeologists uncovered human remains dating to the 3rd and 4th centuries. They were buried deep. Traces of 11th-century brick structures were also found. A museum now stands above these discoveries. Visitors can see skeletons and artifacts. The museum is included in the Si Satchanalai Historical Park ticket.

The main chedi is the temple’s star attraction. Built in the Singhalese style it’s thought to have been constructed over a Khmer-era building. Its base features square and octagonal tiers. Small shrines once held Buddha images. Now they are empty. Some plaster remains on the laterite bell. The chedi’s top however collapsed losing its tall finial.

Next to the chedi is the mondop. This small structure opens to the east. Its arched entrance is flanked by niches. They too are now empty. Much of the original plaster remains on the well-preserved laterite. Inside a seated Buddha image sits serenely.

Finally we have the viharn. Only its base lower walls and pillars remain. Square holes in the stuccoed pillars show where wooden beams were once inserted. Imagine the vibrant life that once filled this space.

Wat Chom Chuen’s quiet beauty belies its rich past. It’s a living testament to centuries of faith and resilience. A place where ancient history and modern discovery intertwine. A place you should definitely explore. It’s a journey through time.
