Have you ever wondered what life was like in Tel Aviv before the skyscrapers rose to meet the sky? Before the bustling beach promenade and the vibrant nightlife? This very spot, right here, the heart of Tel Aviv, was once a barren dune. Sand dunes were a common sight along the coastline, but this one would become something special. A place of dreams, a vision of a future Jewish city. It was called Ahuzat Bayit, Hebrew for “homestead,” and it was a dream for the Jewish community, a place to finally build their own city, outside of the old port city of Jaffa. In 1909, 66 families gathered on this very dune, their dreams of a modern, vibrant city full of electric lights, flowing water, and thriving streets, and they drew lots using shells for their plots of land. It was the beginning of Tel Aviv, a place where hope blooms. Tel Aviv, built on the sand, became a global metropolis. Its unique Bauhaus architecture, a legacy of the German Jewish architects who made Tel Aviv their home, draws visitors from all over the world. Today, Tel Aviv is a dynamic city filled with life, a testament to the dreams of those who dared to build a future on sand.
