“Did those tanks really drive all the way from Moscow?” The Чингэлтэй дүүргийн хөшөө is a monument to the brotherhood between the Soviet Union and Mongolia. It stands on a hill overlooking Ulaanbaatar, a silent sentinel to a shared history. The Чингэлтэй дүүргийн хөшөө was built in 1956 to commemorate the Soviet soldiers who died in World War II. It is a circular structure, with a tiled mural depicting scenes of Soviet-Mongolian cooperation. The mural shows moments like the Soviet support for Mongolia’s declaration of independence in 1921 and the Soviet triumph over Nazi Germany. It also depicts the Soviet defeat of the Japanese Kwantung Army at Khalhkin Gol on the Mongolian border in 1939. One particularly striking scene shows Soyuz 39, the Soviet spacecraft that carried the first Mongolian, Jugderdemidiin Gurragchaa, into space. In the center of the Чингэлтэй дүүргийн хөшөө stands a 27-meter-tall statue of a Russian soldier. He clutches a victory flag in one arm and a machine gun in the other. At the base of the statue is a smaller, circular plinth that houses earth from revolutionary battles in Mongolia, including Altanbulag, Tolbo Lake, and Khalkhyn Gol. This plinth once had an eternal flame burning within it, but now the flame is only lit on special occasions. As you stand here, looking out over the city, take a moment to reflect on the history that shaped this place. The Чингэлтэй дүүргийн хөшөө is a reminder of the sacrifices made in the name of freedom, and of the enduring bonds between nations.
