Craving an authentic taste of Hong Kong’s culinary history? Then you’ve arrived at the right place. This is Lin Heung Tea House. It’s more than just a restaurant. Lin Heung Tea House is a living, breathing piece of Hong Kong’s cultural heritage.

Lin Heung Tea House started its journey in Guangzhou in 1889. It quickly became a beloved institution. In 1926, Lin Heung Tea House expanded. Two branches opened in Hong Kong. One was in Mong Kok and the other in Central. The Central branch moved to this very location on Wellington Street in 1980. Since then, Lin Heung Tea House has been serving traditional Chinese dim sum. It has garnered international attention from CNN and TIME magazine.

The name Lin Heung means “fragrant lotus”. It comes from the lotus seed paste. This is a key ingredient in many of their dishes. The lotus seeds are special. They are Xiang-lians. These are imported from Hunan, China, known for their smooth flavor.

Stepping inside Lin Heung Tea House is like stepping back in time. Traditional Chinese calligraphy adorns the walls. Landscape paintings add to the ambiance. You will notice something unique about the service here. There is no host to seat you. Instead, diners stand around the tables. They find their own seats.

The waiters will bring you cups. They also provide a basin for rinsing cutlery. If you manage to snag a seat, you get a tally card. Because of the popularity of Lin Heung Tea House, sharing a table is common.

Tea is an essential part of the Lin Heung experience. You can choose from Oolong, Pu’er, Jasmine, or Shoumei tea. The server gives you two cups. Use the bigger one for steeping and the smaller one for drinking. Open the lid of the larger teacup when you need a refill. A staff member will come with a traditional water kettle.

Now, prepare for the dim sum experience. The dim sum at Lin Heung Tea House is served on traditional trolleys. There is no pre-ordering. Follow the trolleys with your tally card in hand. The server will stamp your card as they hand you your chosen delights.

Lin Heung Tea House offers over 30 kinds of dim sum. Alongside classics like har gow and shumai, there are unique dishes. Try the Steamed Chicken Bun or Shumai Made with Liver. If you are feeling adventurous, sample the Whole Winter Melon Soup.

In 2022, Lin Heung Tea House closed. But like a phoenix rising from the ashes, it reopened in April 2024. Former staff members and loyal customers ensured its survival. They understood the importance of this place. They knew Lin Heung Tea House had to remain in its original location.

So, as you savor your dim sum and sip your tea, remember the history within these walls. Lin Heung Tea House is not just a meal. It’s a journey through time. It’s a taste of Hong Kong’s soul.
