Hidden within the bustling city of Sha Tin lies Wong Uk Garden, a tranquil oasis with a secret past. Wong Uk Garden wasn’t always a peaceful park. It was once a vibrant village, a bustling trading post for merchants traveling between Guangdong and Kowloon. The Wong clan, hailing from Xingning county in Guangdong province, founded Wong Uk Village in the 19th century. Imagine the scene: merchants hawking their wares, travelers resting weary feet, and the Wong family presiding over this lively hub. The village thrived until the late 19th century. Sadly, progress has a price. The development of Sha Tin New Town led to the reclamation of Tide Cove. Most of Wong Uk Village was demolished to make way for the expanding city. Amidst the modernization, one solitary structure refused to surrender to time: the Old House. This two-story green-brick building, erected around 1911 by Wong Tsing Wo, stands as a poignant reminder of the village’s rich history. Step closer and admire the intricate mural paintings and traditional decorations adorning the Old House. These delicate artworks offer a glimpse into the artistry and cultural heritage of the Wong clan. In 1989, the Hong Kong government recognized the historical significance of the Old House. It was declared a monument, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Today, Wong Uk Garden stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Wong Uk Village. The park offers a serene escape from the urban hustle, a place where visitors can connect with the past. As you stroll through the tranquil gardens, imagine the echoes of the village’s past: the laughter of children, the clatter of merchants’ carts, and the whispers of ancient stories. Wong Uk Garden is more than just a park. It’s a living memory, a tribute to a vanished village, and a testament to the power of preservation.
