High above Prague nestled on a hillside lies Máchalka vineyard. Its history whispers of ancient times. It’s a place where grapes have been cultivated since the early 12th century.
Máchalka vineyard sits on a slope called Pod Prosekem. Its location in Prague’s Vysočany district is unique. It’s a surprisingly green space amidst the urban sprawl. The vineyard boasts a gentle 15% incline. This creates varied microclimates perfect for growing grapes.
For centuries Máchalka changed hands. It thrived and suffered. The Hussite Wars and the Thirty Years’ War devastated it. Yet it endured. In 1725 Daniel Antonín Petsch owned the vineyard. For almost two hundred years it bore his name Petova vinice. By the early 20th century the city’s growth threatened it. The vineyard was replaced by an apple orchard. This marked the seeming end of its history.
But Máchalka’s story wasn’t over. The Vinařské družstvo svatý Václav stepped in. This association of volunteers had a dream. They would restore the vineyard. From 1996 to 2000 they painstakingly rebuilt Máchalka. With the support of Prague 9 they achieved their goal. They continue its care and cultivation to this day.
Today Máchalka produces excellent quality wines. Nine grape varieties thrive there. Rulandské bílé Ryzlink rýnský Müller Thurgau and Muškát moravský are just a few. The vineyard also holds a gene bank of wine grapes. A testament to its continuing contribution to winemaking.
Each September around St Wenceslas Day a celebration takes place. The Vysočanské vinobraní is a local event. It celebrates tradition and the harvest. From the top you can see Prague spread out below. The bobsled track is to the right. Forests and orchards to the left. The industrial landmarks of Vysočany stand in contrast to the beauty of Máchalka. The O2 Arena and Teplárna Malešice are also visible in the distance. A hiking trail connects Máchalka to Kobylisy and Staré Malešice.
Máchalka isn’t just a vineyard. It’s a story of resilience. A symbol of community and a place of beauty. This little patch of Prague reflects the rich history and enduring spirit of the city itself. It offers a taste of the past and a promise of the future. Come enjoy a glass of wine and a piece of this unique history.
