In 1738 construction began on this very site. The Kingdom of Sardinia commissioned the Palazzo dell’ Arsenale Militare. The initial designs came from Filippo Juvarra in 1728 and 1730. Antonio Felice De Vincenti a military architect oversaw the work. Construction was completed in 1783.
Originally the Palazzo dell’ Arsenale Militare served as a military arsenal and training facility. It housed the Royal Schools of Theoretical and Practical Artillery and Fortification. This was a hub for military innovation and education.
In 1861 a significant change occurred. The arsenal functions moved to a new location. This was the former gunpowder factory that had been rebuilt after a devastating explosion in 1852.
The Palazzo dell’ Arsenale Militare remained a military school. It became part of the Royal Army of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy. That year also saw the establishment of a precision laboratory. Its purpose was to test new weapons.
Over the years the Palazzo dell’ Arsenale Militare has undergone several transformations. In 1928 it was renamed the School of Application of Artillery and Engineering. During the Allied bombings of Turin in 1942 the building suffered significant damage.
In 1976 the application schools for infantry cavalry artillery and engineering were unified. They were placed under a single command. This created the School of Application and Institute of Military Studies. It became the primary training center for Italian Army officers.
Since 2003 the Palazzo dell’ Arsenale Militare has also hosted staff courses for senior officers. In 2009 it became the headquarters for the Training Command and Application School.
