Right in the heart of Turin, you’ll find the Madonna della Divina Provvidenza. It is a church with a story of resilience and beauty. The building stands tall, a testament to faith and community. The Madonna della Divina Provvidenza was built in 1921 and designed by architect Paolino Napione. It’s a simple building, a rectangle with a three-nave layout. There’s a portico, a sort of covered walkway, at the entrance that sits above the street. You reach it by walking up a wide staircase. The church has seen its share of hardship. It was bombed during World War II and had to be rebuilt. But, despite the destruction, the church survived.

You’ll see the heart of the church in its most beautiful form in the apse. The paintings there were done by Antonio Testa, a very talented artist who avoided academic approaches. He painted the Coronation of the Virgin, where angels and saints surround Mary as she is crowned with light. In the upper part of the painting, you’ll see Saint Joseph, Saint Zachary, Saint Anne, Saint John the Baptist, and the Archangel Michael. Below them, you’ll notice the Apostles. In the group of saints, look for Saint Monica, Saint Lucy, Saint Agnes, Saint Tecla, and Saint Agatha. Notice how Testa brings these historical figures to life and fills them with real emotion. He makes them feel as if they are right there in the presence of the Virgin Mary.

The Madonna della Divina Provvidenza stands as a symbol of hope and faith for the people of Turin. This church is a place where people gather to celebrate their faith and to find comfort in times of need. The Madonna della Divina Provvidenza is just one small example of the many impressive churches in the beautiful city of Turin.
