Ever wondered what lies behind those walls adorned with Moorish Revival architecture? The Tempio Israelitico of Turin. It stands as a testament to faith. It also embodies resilience.

Let’s step back in time to 1848. The Albertine Statute granted civil rights to Jewish people in the Kingdom of Sardinia. The Jewish community in Turin wanted to show their presence. They desired to establish their place in the Kingdom’s capital. So they decided to build a synagogue. This marked a significant moment of emancipation.

Initially, Alessandro Antonelli was chosen to build the temple in 1859. His vision however proved too grand. The project exceeded the community’s budget and scope. By 1875, they made a difficult decision. They sold the half-completed building to the city. This building later became the Mole Antonelliana. In return, the community received money and land. This land became the site of the present-day Tempio Israelitico.

Enrico Petiti began work on the new synagogue in 1880. He embraced the Moorish Revival style. The Tempio Israelitico was completed in 1884. The four onion-domed towers reflected the trends in late 19th-century European Synagogue architecture. This style expressed a search for individuality. It also set it apart from other denominations’ places of worship.

Tragedy struck on November 20, 1942. Allied bombardments devastated the city. The Tempio Israelitico was almost completely destroyed. Only the exterior walls remained. It was a devastating blow to the community.

But the spirit of Turin’s Jewish community could not be extinguished. From 1945 to 1949, the Tempio Israelitico was rebuilt. It rose from the ashes to its current glory.

In 1970, a smaller synagogue known as Tempio Piccolo was created in the basement. It provides a space for daily prayers. Baroque furniture from the synagogue of Chieri furnished the Tempio Piccolo. The main hall got a liturgical adaptation in 1986-87. A new tevah was placed at the center. Pews surrounded it in keeping with local tradition.

Today, the Tempio Israelitico stands as a symbol. It represents the integration of Turin’s Jews. It is a tribute to their enduring faith. It is also a monument to their history. It attracts visitors with its architecture and history.

Before we move on, take a moment to appreciate the Tempio Israelitico. Note its architectural details. Remember the stories of resilience and faith. Consider how the Tempio Israelitico reflects the Jewish community. It shows their place within Turin’s rich cultural tapestry.
