Did the name “Cottolengo” ever cross your path before? Right here, before the Chiesa di San Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo, stands a testament to a man whose life was a whirlwind of faith, charity, and tireless dedication. Chiesa di San Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo isn’t just a church. It’s a beacon, a symbol of hope radiating from the heart of the Piccola Casa della Divina Provvidenza, the “Little House of Divine Providence”. This sprawling complex, encompassing the Chiesa di San Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo, was the brainchild of Saint Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo. Born in 1786, Cottolengo began his religious journey as a Franciscan tertiary and later a priest. He served as a canon in Turin. One fateful day in 1827, he encountered a dying pregnant woman rejected by hospitals. This tragic event ignited a fire in his soul.

He sold his possessions, rented rooms, and on January 17, 1828, began his charitable work. The cholera outbreak of 1831 forced him to relocate his growing endeavor to Valdocco, laying the foundation for the Piccola Casa della Divina Provvidenza. The Chiesa di San Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo became the spiritual heart of this burgeoning “city of charity”. The complex expanded rapidly, encompassing specialized “families” catering to diverse needs: the sick, orphans, disabled, deaf, blind, and the mentally ill. Cottolengo’s unwavering faith in divine providence sustained the Piccola Casa through financial storms. Stories abound of miraculous provisions arriving just as the coffers ran dry. He fostered a deeply spiritual environment. He emphasized daily communion and prayer as the bedrock of their mission. Cottolengo tirelessly worked until he contracted typhoid and died in Chieri on April 30, 1842. His legacy lives on. The Piccola Casa, with Chiesa di San Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo at its center, still serves thousands. It stands as a tangible expression of Cottolengo’s boundless compassion, a testament to his unwavering faith in divine providence. His canonization in 1934 cemented his place as a saint of charity, his life a shining example of the power of love and service to humanity.
