Do you notice the subtle geometry at play in the Chiesa della Santissima Trinità? Right here on Via Garibaldi stands a testament to faith expressed through architecture. This is the Chiesa della Santissima Trinità. Its story begins with a brotherhood.
In 1557, the Confraternita della Santissima Trinità formed. This group aided pilgrims. Initially, they were based in San Pietro de Corte Ducis. But they needed more room. The church of Sant’Agnese was demolished in 1583. It stood on this very spot.
Ascanio Vitozzi designed the new church. He was a member of the brotherhood and a ducal architect. His design constantly echoes the Trinity. The building is a central-plan church. It features an equilateral triangle within a circle. Three entrances welcome visitors. Three choirs uplift voices. Three altars invite prayer. The Chiesa della Santissima Trinità was consecrated in 1606. However, the dome wasn’t complete until 1661. It spans 17 meters. It rises 47 meters high. The Theatine order occupied the church from 1627 to 1631.
The 1700s saw changes. The west side integrated into Via Garibaldi’s new layout. Marchini finished the east side in 1830. World War II brought destruction. Bombings in 1943 damaged the apse. The 18th-century altar suffered greatly. Statues by Ignazio Perucca vanished. The wooden choir was also badly damaged. Reconstruction followed the war.
Michelangelo Garove designed the main altar. Francesco Aprile built it between 1699 and 1703. It features a grand tabernacle. Its door shows the risen Christ. Above the altar stands an 18th-century crucifix. A pink marble ciborium frames it. Columns of the same marble support it.
Carlo di Castellamonte designed the left altar in 1635. Silvestro de Montoliveto donated it. He was president of the brotherhood. A gilded frame holds an icon above the altar. It depicts Santa Maria del Popolo. Giovanni Caracca painted it in the 1500s.
Filippo Juvarra designed the right altar between 1717 and 1734. The altarpiece is a painting from 1780. It shows Madonna and Saints Agnese, Stefano and Filippo Neri. This artwork honors past churches. It also commemorates the Roman Trinity brotherhood.
Angelo Marchini created the neoclassical facade in 1830. Domenico Banti added a bas-relief. It depicts the crowning of Mary. Giuseppe Leoni restored the dome in 1846. Luigi Vacca and Francesco Gonin painted frescoes inside. The Gloria della Santissima Trinità in Paradiso depicts angels. They sing praises to God. The Trinity is at the center. God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are all depicted. Angels represent celestial harmony. Seraphim, cherubim and thrones mediate between the Trinity and the saints.
Look closely at the interior. Notice how light plays on the marble. Consider the echoes of history in its design. The Chiesa della Santissima Trinità embodies faith and artistry. It is a place where heaven and earth meet.
