Picture the grandeur of Villa della Regina. Its elegant facade stands before you a testament to centuries of history.

This magnificent villa nestled on the hills east of Turin boasts a rich past. Initially conceived in 1615 by Ascanio Vitozzi it was far more than just a residence. It was a vision of Cardinal Maurizio of Savoy. He was a cardinal with political ambitions not religious ones. Maurizio later became Prince of Oneglia. His wife Ludovica inhabited the villa which was then called Villa Ludovica. Maurizio hosted gatherings of leading academics and intellectuals. Among them were Emanuele Tesauro and the future Pope Innocent X. They formed the Accademia dei Solinghi. They debated literature science philosophy and mathematics.

After Ludovica’s death in 1692 Queen Anna Maria of Orléans made it her summer home. She preferred this location to the more formal royal palaces. Filippo Juvarra redesigned and expanded the villa to reflect the tastes of the time. It became a place of leisure and delight.

The villa’s beauty is not confined to its interior. The exterior is equally stunning. A large elliptical terrace called the Gran Rondeau features a magnificent fountain. A marble Neptune sits in the center surrounded by eleven river gods. Beyond the terrace a tiered garden unfolds. It features sculptures boxwood hedges and water features like the Grotta del Re Selvaggio. This grotto is a marble structure decorated with colorful stones and mirrors. The villa’s highest point is the Belvedere offering panoramic views.

The French occupation saw the villa become part of the imperial patrimony. Napoleon himself stayed there in 1805. Later King Victor Emmanuel II gifted it to the National Institute for Daughters of Italian Soldiers. It served as a school for girls for decades.

Today Villa della Regina is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Residences of the Royal House of Savoy. It stands as a timeless symbol of Turin’s rich history. The villa continues to capture the imaginations of all who visit. It is a lasting reminder of the opulence and intellectual life of the Savoy dynasty. Its blend of history architecture and art makes Villa della Regina an unforgettable destination.
