Whispers of ancient resilience echo through Sofukuji. This Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple in Higashimurayama, Tokyo, holds a secret. Sofukuji’s Jizō hall isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a time capsule, the oldest intact building in Tokyo Prefecture. Founded in 1270 during the Kamakura period, Sofukuji’s history is intertwined with legends. One tale speaks of Regent Hōjō Tokiyori, miraculously healed by a local priest. Grateful, he commissioned the Jizō hall’s construction. A fascinating detail, given Tokiyori’s death in 1263. This discrepancy adds intrigue. It suggests the temple’s true origins lie with Tokiyori’s son, Hōjō Tokimune. Under Tokimune’s rule, Japan repelled the Mongol invasions. The current Jizō hall, rebuilt in 1407, showcases Kamakura-era ingenuity. The builders employed techniques that allowed for strength, elasticity, and intricate detail. From the outside, the hall appears two-storied, with elegantly upturned eaves. Inside, it’s a single, open space, a testament to the unique Zenshūyō style. This architectural marvel also features a lower roof, or mokoshi, covered in copper for preservation. Sofukuji’s Jizō hall isn’t just beautiful. It’s a survivor. The hall’s innovative use of Japanese cypress, steel support chisels, and cleverly designed brackets allowed it to withstand earthquakes. Originally thatched, the roof was replaced with shingles in 1933. This “Kokerabuki” style mirrors that of the Katsura Imperial Villa and Kinkaku-ji. Designated a National Treasure in 1952, the hall is open to the public only once a year, during the Jizō festival on November 3rd. But Sofukuji’s healing legacy extends beyond its walls. A local tradition involves wooden dolls placed outside the hall. When someone falls ill, a doll is taken to their home. Upon recovery, the doll and a new companion are returned, symbolizing renewed health. Sofukuji is more than just a temple. It’s a story of resilience, innovation, and a connection to the past that continues to resonate today.
