Step into the serene atmosphere of the Mori Ogai Memorial Museum. This isn’t just a museum it’s a portal to the life and times of a literary legend. The museum opened in 2012 marking the 150th anniversary of Mori Ogai’s birth. It stands on the very site of his former residence Kancho-Ro.

Mori Ogai a prominent figure of the Meiji era was more than just a novelist. He was a physician a translator and a critic. He lived in this Sendagi Bunkyo Ward residence with his family from 1892 until his death in 1922. From the second floor he could see the white sails off the coast of Shinagawa inspiring the name Kancho-Ro.

The Mori Ogai Memorial Museum is a treasure trove of Ogai’s life. You’ll find his handwritten manuscripts letters and postcards. It’s a haven for scholars and fans alike. But it’s more than just a collection of artifacts. It’s a window into the literary salon that Kancho-Ro once was. Many writers visited Ogai including Nagai Kafu Akutagawa Ryunosuke and Ito Sachio.

The original Kancho-Ro was lost to fires after Ogai’s death. The land however was preserved by his descendants. It became a memorial park in 1950 before the museum finally opened. Before the current museum there was a library with a memorial section.

The museum isn’t just about the past. It also offers modern amenities. There’s a shop a library a cafe and even a lecture room. The cafe interestingly offers German-style snacks. This is a subtle nod to Ogai’s time in Germany where he studied and immersed himself in European literature and arts. He even translated many German works.

The Mori Ogai Memorial Museum isn’t simply a building. It’s a living testament to a remarkable man. His contributions to literature medicine and culture resonate even today. His legacy lives on in the pages of his novels in his translations and in this very museum. Take your time explore and immerse yourself in the world of Mori Ogai.
