In 1978 a Royal Command elevated the program. Now students could pursue a Drungtsho degree. It was a significant step. It signaled the growing importance of traditional medicine. The institution evolved. In 1992 it became the National Institute of Traditional Medicine. It moved to its present location in Kawang Jangsa.
