The stadium underwent a complete transformation in 2007. This was to prepare for another grand event: the coronation of the fifth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. But Changlimithang Stadium is not just about coronations. It’s the national stadium of Bhutan and the heart of Bhutanese football. This is where the Bhutan national football team plays, charging the field with their signature passion. The stadium has also been witness to historic moments in Bhutanese football history. One such moment was the addition of floodlights in 2011, thanks to a generous donation from the Tata Group. This marked a new era for the sport in Bhutan, allowing matches to be played under the brilliance of floodlights. Interestingly, this isn’t just a space for professional athletes. In a heartwarming display of community spirit, the football field is available for public hire.
