Smell that? The aroma of freshly baked bread and exotic spices. That’s Sarona Market. Welcome to a place where history whispers through the walls.

Sarona Market isn’t just a place to shop and eat. It’s a living testament to a fascinating past. This vibrant market sits on land once home to the Templers. They were a German Protestant sect who arrived in the Holy Land in 1871. They built Sarona as an agricultural community. It thrived for decades supplying Tel Aviv with milk and produce.

But Sarona’s story is far from simple. The British commandeered parts of Sarona during World War I. They deported many Templers. The Jewish Yishuv protested these deportations. Later Nazi influence within the Templer community led to boycotts of their businesses. World War II brought more upheaval. The British arrested many Templers turning Sarona into an internment camp.

After the war the land was used by the British army. In 1947 it became Camp Yehoshua the temporary seat of the new Israeli government. Sarona held a key role in the early years of Israel’s statehood. The first Israeli stamps were printed there. Many government ministries operated from Sarona before moving to Jerusalem.

Sarona’s Templer buildings were at risk of demolition. A determined effort saved many of them. Now restored these magnificent structures house Sarona Market. The market blends old and new. It offers an eclectic mix of cuisines and products reflecting Tel Aviv’s vibrant culture. It is a place of delicious food and rich history.

Today you can wander through the restored buildings. Enjoy the diverse culinary offerings. Remember Sarona’s dramatic past. It is a place of resilience a testament to the enduring human spirit. This place is more than a market. Sarona Market is a living history lesson a vibrant heart of Tel Aviv.
