Question: What began as a 70-bed hospital in 1936 and evolved into a leading medical center in Israel? That’s Rabin Medical Center. It stands before us. It is a testament to the country’s pioneering spirit and commitment to healing.

Rabin Medical Center is more than just a hospital. It’s an institution deeply woven into the fabric of Israel’s history. Originally named Beilinson Hospital, it was founded to serve the agricultural settlements nearby. Jewish workers donated two days’ wages towards its construction.

In 1942, HaSharon Hospital was established. It began as a satellite surgical unit of Beilinson. Both hospitals grew to meet the increasing medical needs of the population.

Beilinson Hospital achieved several firsts in Israeli medicine. It established the country’s first blood bank in 1938. It was also the first to have a dermatology department. Furthermore, it pioneered a nephrology institute and a dialysis unit. In 1968, the first heart transplant in Israel took place here. The first implantation of an artificial heart was performed at Beilinson in 1995.

In 1996, Beilinson and HaSharon hospitals merged. This consolidation aimed to save budget. The combined institution was renamed Rabin Medical Center. This honored Yitzhak Rabin. He was the prime minister assassinated the previous year.

Today, Rabin Medical Center is a major medical complex. It has 1,300 beds and a staff of 4,500. The center handles 9,000 births and 34,000 operations annually. It continues to expand its research and treatment capabilities.

The Schneider Children’s Medical Center of Israel is located on the grounds. It opened in 1992. It is the largest children’s medical facility in Israel.

Rabin Medical Center received significant revenue for clinical research. In 2012, it topped the list for Israeli hospitals in research income.

While the name Rabin Medical Center reflects a relatively recent change, the legacy of Beilinson and HaSharon hospitals lives on. These institutions were pioneers in Israeli healthcare. They have provided care and innovation for decades. Rabin Medical Center continues this tradition. It serves as a beacon of hope and healing for all who enter its doors. Its commitment is to world-renowned medical care.
