A forgotten nightclub. That’s what Atarim Square was once known for. The Colosseum. The largest club in Israel. It pulsed with life until the late 1990s. Now only echoes remain.

Atarim Square. Or Kikar Atarim as the locals call it. It sits near Tel Aviv’s beach. Architect Yaakov Rechter designed it. It’s a prime example of Brutalist architecture in Israel. A bold statement in concrete.

Before Atarim Square existed there were shacks and shanties. Temporary homes for Jewish refugees. They fled the 1921 Jaffa riots. New immigrants also sought refuge there. The area flooded frequently. The winds were fierce.

In the 1950s the neighborhood began to empty. Tel Aviv wanted to develop its northern beaches. Modern hotels were planned. Atarim Square became a centerpiece. It would link the hotels beaches and Sderot Ben-Gurion. The design included a road and parking lot.

Construction started in 1971. The square utilized the cliff’s natural slopes. The lowest level held a parking lot and gas station. Above that a covered highway. Shops filled the next levels. The top level the roof formed the square itself. Restaurants an amphitheater and a glass-covered rotunda sat there. The rotunda housed the Colosseum Club. A large hotel was built in the north.

The square opened in June 1975. Initially vibrant with shops and restaurants. Duty-free stores attracted tourists. Crime rose in the late 1970s. The square fell into disrepair. Mayor Shlomo Lahat even joked about a Scud missile destroying it during the 1991 Gulf War.

The name changed too. It was originally Namir Square. Mordechai Namir’s widow Ora requested the name be removed. She felt it didn’t reflect her husband’s legacy. Now his name graces a road instead.

Renovation attempts have failed. Atarim Square remains a complex blend of ambition and neglect. A testament to a bygone era a unique landmark. And a place where the past and the future wrestle for dominance.
