Raanana wasn’t always a thriving city. It started as a small American-Jewish settlement. It was established near Tabsur a village where a significant World War I battle had occurred. The initial years were tough. The settlers faced economic struggles. They even tried raising cattle. Things improved in the late 1920s and 1930s. They discovered a rich groundwater source. Citrus farming thrived. Middle-class immigrants arrived boosting the community.

World War II brought challenges. The citrus industry suffered. Raanana adapted. Settlers transitioned to mixed farming and began exploring industrial opportunities. The 1940s saw the construction of new housing. This was funded by Zionists in the US and South Africa. These quarters welcomed Yemenite and other immigrants.

By 1948 Raanana was a town of 3000 residents. The Israeli military action that year depopulated the nearby Arab village of Tabsur. Raanana expanded onto that land. Growth was rapid. By the late 1960s the population reached 8500. The area covered 15 square kilometers. Raanana became a city in the 1980s.

There’s even a small Hasidic community.
