“How did the Iglesia Testigos de Jehovah begin here in Tegucigalpa?” a visitor asks. The story of the Iglesia Testigos de Jehovah is a testament to faith and perseverance. It began with a single missionary and grew into a nationwide movement.

Let’s step back to 1946. Darlean Mikkelsen arrived in Tegucigalpa. She was one of the first missionaries. She had just graduated from Gilead’s third class. She was assigned to the capital of Honduras.

Imagine her surprise. She could not even pronounce Tegucigalpa. She learned that in the Lenca language it meant Silver Hills. It was once common to see trains of burros plodding into town from the mines in the hills. They were laden with silver. The airport was a small wooden building with a short airstrip. Still Darlean found the capital more developed than she expected.

The work of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Honduras started long before that. In 1930 Miss Freddie Johnson began preaching the Kingdom message. She traveled the north coast and the Bay Islands. She was accompanied only by her horse. This anointed pioneer needed strong faith to reach people. She visited banana plantations and coastal cities like Tela La Ceiba and Trujillo. There were no roads then only tracks through the jungle. She left over 2700 books and booklets with interested people.

In mid-1946 Nathan H Knorr visited Honduras. He set up a branch office. That same year Donald Burt traveled into the interior. He assessed the needs for future special pioneers.

Back in Tegucigalpa Darlean faced challenges. She had to learn a new language. She also had to adapt to a new culture. Despite these challenges she persevered.

The early missionaries established a foothold. By 1946 there were nine missionaries in Honduras. The first congregation was formed. They conducted 57 home Bible studies. The future looked promising.

Between 1946 and 1949 the number of publishers grew. It went from 19 to 256. The number of congregations increased from one to six. Bible studies also jumped from 57 to 160. The seed of faith had been planted. It began to sprout.

The Iglesia Testigos de Jehovah emphasizes Bible education. They focus on Jehovah as the true God. They consider themselves his chosen followers. They are known for door-to-door evangelism. They share their beliefs with others.

Today the Iglesia Testigos de Jehovah continues to thrive in Tegucigalpa. It is part of a worldwide community. They gather to worship learn and support one another. From humble beginnings the Iglesia Testigos de Jehovah has become a beacon of faith for many in Honduras. Its growth is a testament to the power of belief. It shows the dedication of those who share their message.
