The missionary members of the Franciscan Order erected the Iglesia San Francisco de Asis. They were evangelizing in Real de Minas de Tegucigalpa in the 16th century. Construction finished in 1590. Later, in 1735, Bishop Fray Antonio Guadalupe López Portillo ordered a reconstruction.
Inside Iglesia San Francisco de Asis, admire the exquisite interior finishes. Diego de Aguileta y Peralta commissioned a carved and gilded altarpiece in 1665. It was created for the image of the crucified Christ. The Baroque and Rococo retablo is the work of the Guatemalan School of Carving. Master Vicente Gálvez created it in the 17th century. The other Baroque retablos and Solomonic columns were installed in the 18th century.
Iglesia San Francisco de Asis boasts a significant collection of religious art. These pieces date from the 16th and 18th centuries. Noteworthy items include paintings by Zepeda and Villafranca. The church also houses several important images. These include the images of Cristo de la Misericordia, Señor de Esquipulas and Jesús Nazareno. Also on display is an image of San Francisco de Asís, the patron saint of the order and the church’s namesake. You can also find images of Santa Teresa de Jesús and the Inmaculada Concepción de María. A painting of the Virgen de Guadalupe is also present. Note that the image of San Juan was once stolen.
Adjacent to the Iglesia San Francisco de Asis is the Cuartel San Francisco. But the Cuartel is not part of the original church construction. The Cuartel San Francisco now houses the Museo Histórico Militar. Here, you can explore documents, old weapons, artifacts and historical photos.
